Dial-up requires no additional infrastructure on top of the telephone network. Dial-up is usually the only choice available for most rural or remote areas where getting a broadband connection is impossible due to low population and demand. Sometimes dial-up access may also be an alternative to people who have limited budgets, though affordable broadband is now increasingly available across the world.
Unlike broadband, a dialup connection can be accessed from any phone line in the world, although the user may have to pay high long-distance charges.
Performance
Dial-up connections usually have high latency that can be as high as 200 ms or even more, which can make online gaming or videoconferencing difficult, if not impossible. While some games, such as Star Wars: Galaxies, Age of Empires III and The Sims Online are capable of running on 56 K dial-up (according to the manufacturer), nearly all games made after the late '90s will display some sort of extreme lag when attempting to run them on such a connection.
Replacement by broadband
Though dialup may have a much lower speed and higher latency than broadband connections, it often has a lower price and fewer service and/or location requirements. For some users, dialup can be a cost and convenience advantage compared with broadband services. For others, it may be the only option available.
