What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is your unique identity on the Internet, for example, mydomain.co.uk It is a company's or individuals presence on the Internet. A domain name is used with your web address and email. If your domain name is mydomain.co.uk your web site address would be www.mydomain.co.uk and your email could be anything@mydomain.co.uk

Why should I have a Domain Name?

A domain name gives you a unique identity and presence on the Internet. This will enable you to compete with your competitors and gives a more professional appearance to your customers rather than promoting the name of your ISP.

Even if you are not immediately going to use your domain name it is vital that you secure it. Otherwise someone else may register it before you and possibly build an Internet presence built around your company's identity!

Why is it important to secure domain names?

If you don't take precaution to secure your name today, you are at risk of losing it! That's the brutal fact. To effectively communicate with other Internet users a domain name gives you a unique identity on the Internet.

Why should I secure all available domains?

This is a serious consideration for all businesses attempting to establish their company's presence on the Net. With so many people starting up internet related businesses, protecting their own personal identity is of paramount importance. There is little if no restriction in place to stop anybody from registering YOUR business name. This has also led to an increase in "Cyber Squatters", internet users who purposely buy up other peoples names and either attempt to sell them on or poach their business by receiving lost emails or customers typing in your name but with the wrong ending. Your name is your identity, use it and protect it.

Our domain search is the best in the business, searching domains directly on the registrar to ensure that you receive the most up-to-date information possible. Additionally, we suggest other domains to make sure you can protect your brand name. Click here to search through domains.

What do I do If my first choice has gone?

Securing your first choice of name is becoming increasingly difficult due to the speed at which domain names are being registered. In the event of your name already being taken you may want to try following these helpful tips:

Is your name available in another suffix i.e. if your first choice is domainname.co.uk, is your name available in.com or .net or .org or .org.uk?

If they are all taken, can you change your domain slightly by inserting a hyphen "-". A hyphen is the only allowed non-alphanumeric character within a domain name e.g. domain-name.co.uk?

Can you add to your name, i.e. domainname4sale.co.uk or domainnamedirect.co.uk?

If you are still unsure a member of our sales department will be able to assist you. Please call us on 0845 117 0366.

How do I use my Domain Name?

Your domain name is the focal point to your web site and your business. A good name will separate you from the millions of other companies each trying to make a name for themselves on the Net. How you use it is as important as actually getting it. You should use your new web or email address in all forms of advertising, point of sales, telephone conversations and especially when contacting new or existing customers via letter. Remember that the world is rapidly changing. Many people nowadays prefer to communicate via the Net for convenience and to cut costs. If customers generally request promotional material from your company, pointing them towards your new web site will demonstrate your company as being modern thinking and focused in moving your business image forward. It will also help cut down on printing and postage costs as all your information is there plus that extra depth of information you may have needed to omit from your old brochure.

Your web address will be www.yourdomain.com and your email address sales@yourdomain.com

Who are the LTD & PLC domain names for?

The suffixes .ltd.uk and .plc.uk are reserved for companies who are registered as a Limited or Public Limited Company. When applying for these names, the naming authority will contact Companies House and do a manual search to establish if you are the company who own the rights to that business title. Nominet (The UK Registrar) are extremely strict as to how your name must appear. For example If Freezone Internet Ltd wanted to register this name; we would need to submit the application for Freezoneinternet.ltd.uk. Freezone could not shorten the name in any way i.e. Freezone.ltd.uk only the full registered name is acceptable.

Why secure an international domain?

International names i.e. .com .net .org are the most sought after domains. These are top level domains. They are the most sought after due to their availability for use and purchase from most countries around the world as opposed to the local ones .co.uk (UK) .co.fr (France) .co.nz (New Zealand). Many UK businesses own .com or .net names because they are more popular not just globally but in the UK as well. Many UK citizens recognise the .com or .net brand as an internet name but are still a little unsure of the significance of a .co.uk. Securing a name with a top level suffix will also help your site with many of the worlds top Search Engines as some give priority to top level domains.

With so many companies racing to get their corporate identities secured on the Net, the need to register the most popular endings is becoming a high priority. There are internet users who are purposely registering hundreds of good domain names as well as the names of other companies in a bid to sell them on at a higher price. At present this buying and selling of names is not illegal. This has created a market where customers who own another company's name can set up web and mail forwarding on these company names to catch all people typing in the wrong ending and forwarding them on to their own site. The poaching of customers in this manner is increasingly common.

What are your domain name prices?

To register a UK domain name on its own, for example .co.uk .org.uk .ltd.uk plc.uk the cost of registration alone is £11.98 (excl. VAT) for 2 years.

To register an International Domain name, for example .com .net .org the cost of registration alone is £29.99 (excl. VAT) for 2 years.

What characters can be used to form a domain name?

There are only three types of characters which can be used in a domain name.
- a number (0-9)
- a letter (A-Z)
- a hyphen "-" used within the domain name, but not at the start or end

What should I remember when choosing a domain name?

If you want your name to stick out or your internet venture to flourish, there are a few things to consider:

Keep it catchy
Millions have already been registered. Make yours stick out and easy to remember.

The shorter the better
The longer the name, the greater the risk of typos.

Keep it all one word
Try not to add hyphens "-" in your domain name if you can help it as telling people your email address may become confusing for them when you try to explain what a hyphen or dash is. However, if your web address/email address will predominately be on advertising material a hyphen often helps as it visually splits and highlights your name better.

Make it look good! First impressions last, make your name look as good as it sounds.

What is Multiple Domain Name Registration?

There are customers who purely need to register multiple domain names without the hosting package. This is usually for people who wish to sell on these names to prospective clients, to bank for the future when it becomes harder to find a good domain name or to protect an area of their particular market/product.

The server is the platform on which a web site resides. This continually maintains and displays each person's web site visibly to the world 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Hosting also caters with the forwarding and holding of their emails.
