New technology brings 'opportunities and issues' for internet security

New technology is leading to a number of challenges and opportunities when it comes to internet security, a specialist has claimed.

Computer use and the internet have now both become very private, meaning that parents have limited control over what their children are doing, a representative from Insafe has highlighted.

Janice Richardson, coordinator at Insafe, said: "I think as technology improves and becomes more mobile and more rapid, problems will get more difficult [and] you'll have to think very rapidly about how to respond in certain situations."

However, Ms Richardson urged that people should not forget that the opportunities provided by new technology "far outweigh" the potential issues.

Internet security has been addressed by Entrust's Mark Reeves, who advised that people should check that sites they are using for shopping purposes should be secured with an HTTPS (hypertext transfer protocol secure) certificate.

Mr Reeves added that more education is necessary for shoppers to understand when a site is not credible.
