Cloud changes 'the ability of companies'Published Date: 13:33:26 20/02/2012
Cloud computing can help to change the ability of businesses of all sizes, a specialist has stressed.
The technology is creating a significant amount of hype among businesses, with firms now understanding the benefits brought on by the systems, such as its real-world economics, a specialist from ScaleBase said in Ranier Communications' Future of the Cloud Roundtable.
Paul Campaniello, vice-president of global marketing for ScaleBase, said that cloud computing can change the growth rates of firms, enabling them to address fundamental IT concerns in a way that has not been seen before.
Mr Campaniello noted that the technology allows people to avoid migration to other cost sets, such as operating expenditure and capital expenditure.
Another participant of the roundtable was Nati Shalom, chief technology officer and founder of GigaSpaces Technologies.
Mr Shalom underlined that cloud computing has led to new software, including support for Java, Linux and other operating systems.
He also suggested that the technology could have a significant impact on businesses, explaining: "We've seen it with the internet, when it came in and changed the entire industry and cloud - in my view - is an even bigger trend than the internet itself."
Mr Shalom commented that cloud computing can bring benefits to new businesses.
"Start-ups today can be launched very quickly and can basically launch new competitive platforms that were never possible before and you needed a huge investment just for that. So cloud for me is here to stay and is changing the environment," he stated.
The impact of cloud computing has also been highlighted by Goldsmiths, University of London representative Dr Mick Grierson, who believes that the technology could lead to traditional desktops being expelled from workplaces.
Dr Grierson added that, while people in businesses will still use desktops, they will not be utilised in the same way as in the past.
